Meet Captain Schroef “Scruff”

Schroef’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. Once a hardworking K9, he suffered a devastating injury that left him facing medical retirement — and even the possibility of euthanasia. Thanks to surgery, rehabilitation, and the unwavering love of his adoptive handler, Darcey, Schroef was given a second chance at life.

Though retired from active duty, Schroef still trains in detection work and search & rescue to stay sharp and keep his energy high. He has come a long way from being unsocial and withdrawn — today he’s the proud Captain of K9SOH, the highest-ranking member of the pack under our Chief.

But he’s not all work and no play — when traveling with Darcey, Schroef insists on hotel rooms with two beds so he can leap back and forth between them like the goofball he is.
